When you take a cruise on the Baltic Sea, you know you are going to see a lot of countries and a lot of capital cities on your trip. On the Scandinavian side, you have Denmark, Sweden and Finland. On the European side you have Poland, Germany, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania. Then to the east you have Russia, where the delights of St Petersburg await. With so much to see it is difficult really to know where to begin. Fortunately you have a wealth of cruise companies to choose from, notably Norwegian, Fred Olsen, Royal Caribbean, Viking, and P&O.

Baltic Cruises in 2018

For a fully modern experience that guarantees a certain level of sophistication, a Baltic cruise will constantly surprise you. Consider Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki as your points of reference. As coastal cities which are also the capital cities of Denmark, Sweden and Finland respectively they have an exceptionally close relationship with the sea. This means that they are perfectly equipped for the needs of those arriving by ship, and that they showcase some of the best aspects of their countries’ culture, entertainment, dining and accommodation (should you wish to stop ashore for a day or two). This is all very much to be expected. Set your sights a little further afield however, and you will encounter equally spectacular cities and national landmarks that may have previously escaped your attention.

Venture to the southern Baltic and the must-see destination is the great city of Riga. Capital of Latvia and a cultural treasure trove, this city houses fully 10% of the combined population of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia combined. Riga city centre is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was European Capital of Culture in 2014. For highbrow entertainment, the Latvian National Opera (which also has an excellent ballet troupe) and the Latvian National Theatre have enough to satisfy any culture-vulture. Perhaps the most unmissable feature of this city (as in, you literally can’t miss it) is the 365m (1200 ft) Riga Radio and TV Tower, the third-tallest tower in Europe. As with the other cities we have mentioned, as a coastal capital Riga perfectly caters for every cruise traveller, whatever your preferences.

A tiny 80 km south of Helsinki lies Tallinn, capital of Estonia. Like Riga, Tallinn boasts UNESCO World Heritage status and was European Capital of Culture in 2011. It is also one of the top 10 cities in the world in terms of its digital and IT prowess. Skype, for example, is one of the many emergent IT companies from this cyber-powerhouse which has more startups than any other nation in Europe.

Cruise to St. Petersburg

By now you will have seen a theme emerging of coastal capital cities, all unique, all fascinating, clustered around the Baltic Sea on every side. Our next city, St. Petersburg, is not a capital but it sits at the easternmost point of the Baltic and is Russia’s second largest city with 5 million residents. However in cultural terms we have saved the best until last for you. Once again, when you visit here you will be visiting an UNESCO World Heritage SIte, and the home of the world-famous Hermitage museum. This is also the second-largest museum in the world, so vast that the Winter Palace (former official residence of the Tsars of Russia) is a mere sub-section of its many parts. As for ballet, Nureyev, Marakova and Baryshnikov all began with the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre Ballet and flourished here. Nureyev and Pavlova also came here to become principal dancers with the Mariinsky.

A summary of a Baltic capitals cruise

It should be becoming clear that almost anywhere you go on a Baltic cruise, you will be faced by an embarrassment of cultural riches that really cannot be done justice with the written word. Any single one of the cities we mention can offer you more activities than you can possibly cope with, and we can only describe the barest bones of what you can expect to see. What we can confidently say is that if you do decide to take a voyage around the Baltic Sea, there are pleasures and experiences to suit every taste.
